What Super Size Me was to the fast food industry, CarLess in L.A. is to global warming – a sort of “answer to An Inconvenient Truth,” if you will.
This feature-length film is about Katie Rogers, and the sacrifice she made in the name of the environment: 80 days without a car in an attempt to have zero carbon emissions in Los Angeles. Katie was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. A true Southern belle, she has an active social life that takes her all over Los Angeles. She works at the non-profit organization, TreePeople, teaching children about our “city forest,” while cultivating a screenwriting career. Simply put, Katie is a girl on the town. Therefore, she needs her car, right? But being a nature-lover, she was frustrated with the impact humans have on the Earth. In the spirit of every individual makes a difference, Katie wanted to do her part. |

The rules were simple: to get anywhere, she couldn’t have any output of carbon into the atmosphere. No driving. No pickups. She could walk, run, bike, or take a bus, as long as she, personally, was not emitting carbon into the atmosphere. Those eighty days were some of the most transformative days of her life. Her adventure answered some questions, but raised even bigger ones. Are Americans addicted to the automobile? Should city officials make laws to limit car use? Can individuals begin thinking in terms of what is best for society? |

What inspired Katie was the interaction with many who are doing their best to make positive change in the world. She attended Critical Mass bike rides and schmoozed with the folks at Green Drinks. She conducted interviews with specialists in the field of alternative transportation. The movement to “re-Green” the planet is happening…and spreading. The theme that came out of the film was this: we all have the power to make a difference — that the little choices we make every day matter. Although problems such as war and global warming can seem looming, the convenient truth is this: it can be turned around. Katie’s eighty days finished on January 1, 2007 and is all captured in digital HD. No carbon was emitted into the atmosphere during the production of this film – not by Katie, not by the cast, crew, or producer. Everyone involved rode the bus, carpooled, walked or biked, gear in hand, or in backpack! We are currently in post-production. |
